Poaugustiański zespół klasztorny w Żaganiu jest jednym z najcenniejszych zabytków sakralnych województwa lubuskiego i ważnym świadectwem historii miasta. Początki kościoła Wniebowzięcia Najświętszej Maryi Panny sięgają 1183 roku, gdy powstała świątynia ufundowana przez księcia Bolesława I Wysokiego. W 1284 roku do Żagania sprowadzono kanoników regularnych św. Augustyna, którzy przejęli kościół i rozpoczęli budowę klasztoru.

Proboszcz parafii

The post-Augustinian monastery complex in Żagań is one of the most valuable sacred monuments in the Lubusz Voivodeship and an important testimony to the city’s history. The origins of the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary date back to 1183, when the first church was founded by Duke Bolesław I the Tall. In 1284, the Canons Regular of St. Augustine were brought to Żagań. They took over the church and began building the monastery. During the Middle Ages the convent became an important religious, scholarly and cultural centre in Silesia, with a monastic school and a notable library.

The church was rebuilt several times. After fires in 1472 and 1486, it was reconstructed as a hall church. In 1515 a new tower was erected and the main nave was expanded. After the great town fire of 1730, the monastery and church were rebuilt in the Baroque style, including the impressive monastic library hall.

After the secularisation of religious orders in 1810, the monastery was dissolved and the church became a parish church. In 2011 the complex was declared a Historic Monument of Poland (Pomnik Historii).

We warmly invite you to visit this place with more than 800 years of history, where you can discover the beauty of architecture, art and spiritual heritage. May your visit also be a moment of prayer and reflection.

Parish Priest

Pfarrer
